The New Training Peaks Virtual App

Training Peaks just released a new virutal cycling app called Training Peaks Virtual, which is free for everyone through March, and free for Training Peaks Premium Members (which all of our coached athletes are) after that! Given it’s an opportunity for athletes to save some money, I wanted to try it out to see if it was up to par.

After doing about 10 rides on the app over the past month or so, I can attest that it is a great alternative to Zwift and other similar applications. The integration with Training Peaks is seemless and it allows you to ride several different ways:

  1. Structured workout in ERG mode: where the trainer adjusts to the prescribed power automatically

  2. Structured workout in terrain mode: which allows you to do a structured workout, but you control the effort and the terrain impacts the ride, just like going outdoors

  3. Structured workout in flat mode: which allows you to do a structured workout where you control your effort but the terrain does not impact the ride

  4. Free ride: you can ride without structure and feel the course just like going outdoors

  5. Race: you can race athletes from around the world in a variety of different formats, and we even have a team race coming up on December 22nd!

  6. GE Team kit: Maybe most importantly, we have our actual team kit set up in the app, so once you sign up, your avatar can look sharp in GE colors!

After a few weeks of riding on Training Peaks Virtual, I’ll be honest, I cancelled my Zwift account and fully migrated over, simply because it gives me what I need and why not save the ~$20 per month!
